INNOVATIONS & CHANGES

Although both of the current novels are interesting and important, I would change the focus from two very different novels (one addressing futurism and the other addressing multicultural perspectives) to two similar novels.

Focusing on futurism, I would keep The Giver by Lowry, but swap out 9/10: A September 11 Story with an Afrofuturism graphic novel. In this way, students will still analyze multicultural perspectives while keeping their focus on futurism.

NEW MATERIAL ALERT!!!

The graphic novel that I would add to the unit would be E.X.O: The Legend of Wale Williams – Part One by Roye Okupe, Ayodele Elegaba, Sunkanmi Akinboye, and Raphael Kazeem. This Afrofuturism graphic novel takes a completely different approach to the future than The Giver, and an analysis of both texts will call students to question and reimagine the paths that the future may take.
